SMART SNACKING TO FUEL YOUR BODY THE HEALTHY WAY

By Patti Miner

Snacking often gets a bad reputation of empty calories and mindless munching. But, when done correctly, it can be a powerful tool for maintaining energy and metabolism and improving overall health.

The key is choosing the right foods to munch on and when to munch or not.

First off, our bodies are designed to go long periods without eating so I try to cut off my munching after 6 pm so I can allow my body to fully digest and reset with intermittent fasting…but that is another article…

The Healthy Snacks that are good for your body are:

Here are some ideas for Healthy Snacks:

Protein – (muscle repair and satiety)

Fiber (digestion and fullness)

Healthy Fats (brain and heart health)

Complex Carbohydrates (sustained energy)

Top Suggested Healthy Snacks

  • Apple Slices with Almond Butter – this combo has fiber, healthy fats and just enough sweetness to curb cravings
  • Hummus with Fresh Vegetables- Carrot Sticks, Cucumbers, Bell Peppers, Broccoli etc… It provides plant based protein.
  • Hard Boiled Eggs and Avocado – Protein to give you fuel
  • Home Made Trail Mix – Raw nuts, seed and dried fruit, for sustained energy, and a balance of protein and fiber that keeps you full and focused.
  • I love snacking on raw organic sunflower seed- this boosts energy, supports a healthy heart and reduces inflammation. It also prevents muscle cramping and supports thyroid, the immune system and blood sugar.
  • My daughter loves eating crystalized ginger which improves digestion, reduces inflammation, and boosts the immune system.
  • I like eating raw organic pumpkin seeds which helps the heart, bones, muscles, blood sugar and immune system.
  • Jicama dipped in Guacamole is amazing. This supports healthy gut bacteria and is a great source of fiber.
  • A baked Sweet potato or home made Sweet potato chips are also delicious and nutritious. Great anti-oxidant and source of fiber.  It also supports eye health and the immune system.

I make a smoothie in a blender and put in some containers so I can grab and go. I mix a handful of carrots and cucumbers, add a banana and an apple (I wash it well, core it and leave the skin on) I add some kale and frozen berries and I like to add cranberry/raspberry 100% juice and spring water. (I never drink reversed osmosis or distilled water -these are known as dead water with all things good about water taken out)

By choosing wholesome, nutrient rich foods, snack time can turn into a powerful addition to your health routine.
